Read Any Good Webcomics?

Talk about the written (and drawn) word right here. Yes, this includes manga. Yes, this includes webcomics.

Read Any Good Webcomics?

Post by Sugar Meowth »

I used to read a whole bunch of webcomics back in the day, and only recently started trying to pick them up a bit again. It's nice having updates to look forward to in the mornings and a good time killer to read an archive of something you're just picking up.

Rain Burn
Image
Rain Burn is a comic by Virmir that updates on Mondays and Fridays. It's a fun fantasy ongoing story with a lot of dragons and other fantasy creatures. a volcano dragon named Brand ends up on the wrong side of the powerful Quetzalcoatl dragons of the sky thanks to his kitsune companion Roko. The queen takes away his wings as punishment, but Princess Saida is sympathetic. She agrees to help get them back from the magical eyestone they're kept in, but a magical mishap causes Saida and Brand to switch bodies. Oh and Roko dies. It's okay, his soul gets to inhabit a balloon animal until the three can get everything set right again.

I started reading this one in the middle after finding it posted on Weasyl and I really love it! At first I just thought the art was kind of cute, but it genuinely grew and me, and when I got around to reading it from the start I really appreciated how well the comic hinted at events to come. It's wound up being a rather sprawling journey through dying forests, undersea kingdoms, and a power-mad eight-tailed kitsune's private island.

The author does a few other comics as well which have all been fun to read. I'm also keeping up with Panic!! Mysterious Dungeons an odd PMD comic about Virmir's sona getting brought into the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon universe and having to adapt to now being an Eevee.

Softies
Image
Softies by Smeallie begins with the Earth exploding. ...leaving a kid named Kay as the sole survivor who happens to get picked up by an intergalactic space-waste collector looking for any good scrap! Its alien operator, Arizona ends up taking Kay in and they just kinda vibe throughout the galaxy trying to get by. Also aboard is Euclid, a fox-like alien with three eyes that has had some computer parts added to their brain. (I'm sorry I'm bad at knowing the species names and would have to dig through archives to find em again).

The stories are cute and the character dynamics work really well. Kay kinda doesn't want to deal with what it means for Earth to be gone and Arizona and Euclid are clearly struggling to make ends meet, leading to arcs about things like contesting a parking violation. A Yinglet boosted it on Mastodon so odds are a few of you saw it recently too.

Pokey The Penguin

Still gets updates sometimes!

What else am I sleeping on?

I have to share my favorite webcomic right now: Tamberlane. It's 445 full colored and beautifully rendered pages in right now, and the artist, Caytlin, is working full time cranking out this comic dutifully.

Image

Adorable characters, and a slow drip of worldbuilding that keeps the reader curious and engaged. Gorgeous full-color art and an attention to detail that puts this comic high and above. I'm hoping it's the next I'll be able to kickstart so I can add to my collection of furry webcomic first prints :3

Damn we got so many yinglets and none of them have said Out-of-Placers yet, the comic that they (and a bunch of other funky critters) originate from.

I'd also be remiss to not mention Meet Me in the Woods, the comic that my species (amphimorpho) originates.

As for others, I kinda dig the concept of Scoob and Shag, which starts off as a dumb gag-a-day comic before rapidly evolving into some weird, violent, action mystery comic. Annoyingly it seems to have gone on indefinite hiatus in 2023.

I can't believe that no one's said TwoKinds yet, its not the oldest but I've been reading this one since high school. Its really wild to think about how I knew about Markiplier's brother before I knew about Markiplier (who I only discovered in college due to FNAF)

Oh dang, this wasn't one I ever read back in the day, but I immediately recognized the characters. I love that some of these have just been going for literal decades now!

Yea!!! There's a sort of "lost media" webcomic I've been trying to find for years now do that i was reading at the same time of TwoKinds. I might post about it over in that forum but it was one of those types of furry comics where anthro people were the norm and it was a slice of life, except there was One Random Human Guy and there was this big unexplained mystery about his existence. It was actually pretty dramatic!

Was recently introduced to something.
It's... kind of a webcomic? But also a visual novel. It's an online text and image based multimedia thing.
https://corru.observer
Feel free to yell at me if it doesn't count, but only after you've taken a look at it.
I'm not all the way through what's currently up, so no spoilers or anything.
I went in basically entirely blind and that's the experience I'd recommend, but for those of you who need a pitch:
Hidden text.
it's a really fucking interesting story about exploring a fragmented alien bio-computer left behind by aliens who stopped trying to make contact with us after... something happened, and trying to unravel what that thing that happened was, what's up with these weird aliens, why this computer was left behind, and why it's so weird.
Also... The visuals are phenomenal. It's the only thing I've ever seen that makes a CGA palette work. A bold choice that's executed well where others have fumbled. Also the soundtrack is great. Seriously, I can't recommend this enough. look at it. now.

17776, 20020, and soon 20021. Jon Bois; sports writer and video essayist of "Pretty Good" fame; is currently working on a trilogy of interactive multimedia stories involving sentient space probes watching bored, immortal humans play through what the sport of football has (d)evolved into. Much like any of Bois' work, enjoying sports is *not* a prerequisite for enjoying the stories he has to tell as it dives into a deeper commentary about humanity and its desire to play.

17776

20020

And 20021 is still being worked on last I saw, possibly seeing a physical release... somehow??

Might be stretching the definition of webcomic as while it has a fair share of imagery, it's a bit heavier on text than a traditional webcomic, with video interstitials adding music choices to the mix as well.

I still poke at Gunnerkrigg Court from time to time, but I haven't really been keeping up with any particular webcomics anymore.

I sometimes open up Questionable Content out of morbid curiosity, but it hasn't been relevant to me for a long time.

I'm open to recommendations!!

I really like Badnix which is set in a video game world but it's from the perspective of the "bad guys" but it's all recontextualized, and it plays with a lot of meta stuff and tropes while still telling a serious story. Hasn't had an update in several years because the artist has been working on a video game set in the same setting, but hopefully someday...! On the other hand that means catching up isn't chasing a moving target.

Kid Radd is a much older comic that has concluded and that also plays with game tropes in a completely different way in a "sprite comic" style.

Oh dear, as someone that never let go of RSS readers my list has gotten quite long but going by
* has not been mentioned yet
* still gets updated semi-regularly
* is not straight up explicit
I think I can cut it down to these:

Beyond the Western Deep
A fantasy adventure following Quinlan and Dakkan on what was supposed to be a diplomatic envoy and quickly becomes a fight for survival.

Tiger Knight Comics
- Swords and Sausages
A medieval fantasy comedy that follows the daily lives of two bumbling rogues, Tor and Silver, as they make their way through a world where things aren't quite right.

- Nine to Nine
A slice of life comic.

Slightly Damned
A fantasy adventure following Rhea, Buwaro and Kieri navigating a world torn by reigniting struggles between Demons and Angels.

Derideal
A SciFi adventure set in a dystopian world and telling the story of two genetically engineered test subjects trying to escape their creators.

THIS IS WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR THE OTHER DAY!!! I was deep into cohost when the creator released it there first, and I spent a whole day playing through it. I didn't expect it to go as deep as it did. Wow, thanks for sharing this!

At this point, i am following like 20 of them. My recommendations are:
Freefall. Main character is a genetically engineered anthro wolf. It has been going very consistently since 1998. It is one of the things that contributed to me becoming a furry.

How to be a wherewolf As the title already implies, it is about werewolves. Main character got bitten as a kid, but the wolf that bit her was chased away, so she and her family had to figure out how to deal with that by themselves for a long time. Shortly after the start of the comic she does finally makes contact with other werewolves, which on the one hand helps understand her condition better, but also does bring some issues with it.

Probably Safe Werwolf loses control during a full moon and flees to another town, where he becomes roommate with a ghost. Also the main character is a furry artist.

Runaway to the stars Science-Fiction with a lot of thought put into their various alien species and how people and technology adapt to their differences.

I also second the recommendations for Out-Of-Placers, Slightly Damned and Meet Me In The Woods earlier in the thread.

I've got a few I keep up with on the regular:

Wilde Life
Wilde Life is a slice of life/supernatural horror comic about a normal guy named Oscar Wilde(not the author) who has a breakdown and runs away from his old life to get away for a while. He picks a small town at random, finds a place to rent there online, and just packs up and goes. It doesn't take long before Oscar starts to realize this town is surrounded by a lot of weird things.

I've been following this comic for a while now and I'm very invested.

Tara and Beverly
It's a comic about lesbians. Very earnest and endearing. I don't feel the need to say more.

Pipe Up!
Very invested in this comic lately. It's about a plural system in which Percy, the primary fronter of the system, disappeared at some unspecified time in the past. His sister Piper stepped up to be the primary front, taking on the strenuous task of pretending to be Percy and maintaining the facade that nothing is wrong for the sake of protecting the system. Also it's a world in which everyone is animals. It's very cute but extremely emotional and CW: Deals with a lot of heavy subject matter, including homophobia/queerphobia, ableist language, and emotionally abusive parents.
▬▬▬▬▬▬⋘⁜※ↈ※⁜⋙▬▬▬▬▬▬
I tried so hard and got so far
But in the end it doesn't even matter
