Re: Coding Hot Takes

Got another hot take for y'all:

There's literally no reason to invent a new, bespoke domain-specific language (DSL) or config file format anymore. You REALLY don't need to reinvent that wheel for your project.

Want to embed a scripting language? You've got plenty to choose from: Lua, Tcl, Ruby ...

Archie vs. Minor Threats

Heh, they're calling it "the crossover event of the year!" and I'm inclined to agree.

"Archie vs. Minor Threats" is going to be the next new thing that I start really looking forward to every month when I go to the comic shop. In my view, the matrimony of Archie (literally Archie and Betty and ...

Re: Post your podcasts

It's less of a "podcast" as such and more of a radio drama, but The Once and Future Nerd is probably my all-time favorite non-musical audio thing, period.

From the website:

THE ONCE AND FUTURE NERD is a serialized audiodrama podcast about three teenagers from modern-day Pennsylvania who find ...

An original IBM PC AT with no sound card was the household computer when I was born, and it was the first computer that I ever spent much time on. It wasn't the first computer that I fell in love with, though (that would be our Macintosh Performa). It's not because it's an unlovable computer. I ...

I do have a TiBook that can dual-boot OS 9 and OS X, and it's even late enough that it's got DVI out so I can hook it up to modern monitors and capture cards.

DVI out is very nice to have today. It might even save your bacon in case your TiBook's built-in screen goes bad (God forbid).

I ...

I suppose my ideal arcade would be mostly nostalgic, since I haven't... really been to an arcade in a while.

- Time Crisis 2
- Zero Gunner
- Cruisin' World
- Hydro Thunder
- Dance Dance Revolution
- that one Indiana Jones pinball that I really enjoy
- Frogger cocktail table!

Re: Please help me make Windows 11 suck less

Indeed, the defaults are absolutely not sensible in recent versions of Windows. Some options to turn things off are hidden behind a right-click menu, others are in the Settings panel, and it's all annoying.

Similarly, I know about things like OpenShell, StartAllBack, and Start11 - But again ...

Ever wondered why it's always Ms. Pac-Man at the arcade? I don't think I've ever seen a Pac-Man cabinet IRL, it's almost universally Ms. Pac-Man in my experience.

This is probably a lukewarm take in the grand scheme of things, but I remain convinced that it's almost never a good idea to omit parentheses, even when the language's syntax explicitly allows for it.

Case in point: Ruby's syntax is extremely forgiving. You don't need parentheses surrounding the ...

Thanks to game engine recreations like devilutionX, I can play Diablo on my favorite computer -- which runs freakin' NetBSD. Such a wonderful game. Incredible atmosphere, even to this day.

However, I usually turn to Torchlight and Torchlight II, which are two of my most comforting of comfort games ...

Merzbow is essential. I'm probably never going to be able to listen to his entire discography (there's so much!), but it is fun to tune in and discover something new every time.

I actually gave that question some thought after a recent obsession with researching 1980s furry zines. It'd take a lot of effort in order to do a good job, but it'd be a lot fun to contribute.

I have 3 Macs still but 2 of them are display pieces. A graphite clamshell iBook and a Mac SE/30. The first one has a bad screen and the second came to me as a Simasimac, and I made it completely die trying to replace the caps.

Clamshell iBooks are so freakin' cool. The dying screens seem to be ...

I've been meaning to actually get started with developing for the Playdate. The tools seem to be very simple, which I greatly appreciate.

I've already started working on one particular game for the Atari ST, but it might actually work better on the Playdate after all.

The Classic Mac thread

I love all of my old computers, but the one that gets by far the most attention from me is the G4 "Quicksilver" 733 MHz from 2001. The seller on eBay had 10.4 "Tiger" installed on it, but I downgraded to Mac OS 9.2.2. The end result is that I have a very capable machine that can do almost everything ...

The coolest bout of video game preservation I've ever seen is for the Dreamcast, and I'm still in awe about it.

I don't usually like to speak in superlatives, but I can truthfully say that "Take Me Home" by Phil Collins is the most important song to me. Re: You stumble upon a blank book

The rustling of the wind through the trees is familiar and inviting, but that's not the only reason why the branches bounce. You squint. What's going on up there?

Two small hands draw open the curtain of leaves and twigs. A fuzzy head, the kind an Earthling rat would have, pokes through. The ...
