Tetris

Post by dogbold_system »

kind of surprised this hasn't come up yet.
we are very much tetris perverts.
our favorites are Apotris on consoles, Nullpomino for customizability, and maybe a spot of Jstris or TETR.IO for competitive play.
our grandma loved this series, and we kept that spirit going in the only way we really could.
so... we ended up being a bit of a pervert about it in the end lmao

there are straight up some srs piece spins that feel like they should be in the game but aren't

I'm one of those TGM perverts. Some people like the Tetris Effect because of how Zen it is but I don't want to feel Zen, I want to feel ANXIETY and PAIN.

TGM4 is fairly good from what I've played of it. It's nice that it's available in a way that's useable with modern setups. Stratches the itch that TGM3 left when we moved on to systems that TGM3 runs funky with.

πŸ”΄ ooh, i've tried TGM. not exactly sure the best way to get access to it, but i might pay for the switch version for less hassle. i've been dying for a port of TGM3, though. i'm very much an SRS purist, and i don't like the other rotation systems as much.
i grew up on the tetris party series (particularly Tetris Axis,) which reward you for every single piece spin, from s/z spins to i-spins

TGM 2 is pretty solid. The only thing you'll really be missing is the fact that there is no Hold function. I would try the Switch port of that to start.
Hidden text.
If you don't want to emulate it that it because TGM2 is super stable on emulators.
TGM 3 will probably be tricky to port, because it's literally just a Windows game. Like the arcade cabinet is just a Windows XP machine. You can get a hold of that but note that it will pretty much always want to run at 640x480 and expect to run in a 60Hz refresh rate environment.

Though actually, I believe in NullPoMino that the Grade Master 2 mode is meant to mirror the way TGM2's Master Mode works and Grade Master 3 is 3's. (Not 100% certain because it's been a while since I've been able to get NullPo to run right on my machines...)

TGM is a great series, and I'm fairly happy with 4.
TGM3 is easy enough to get running on Windows if you can find a Taito Type X loader.

I also play Tetrio and PPT sometimes!

Using a hitbox for Tetris feels optimal for me.

I haven't played nearly as much TGM as I probably should. There's a somewhat-local arcade near me that has a cab of TGM3 available and I did go through the easy mode on said cab at one point.

I generally tend to be a weirdo who mainly plays a lot of pre-guideline variants, however, Atari Tetris being a personal favorite of mine (which is coincidentally also present at said arcade).

Tetrio with TGM sounds is what I prefer, or just Tetris DS. Or The New Tetris, which is actually amazing. I love the aesthetic of TGM but I don't enjoy trying to learn it, I grew up with infinite spin and such and TGM feels like walking in mud.

When I was in better tetris shape I could get around 50% percentile, which makes sense because whenever I play people in tetris I typically either am way better than them or they're way better than me. Tetrio matchmaking was actually the first time I could get competitive matches.

If I'm on PC I play with a saturn controller and adapter. I'm weird.

πŸ”΄ tetris games tend to feel really slow when they have handling settings that don't match your expectations. maybe i should explain those, but tetrio explains them pretty well as is.
also, the rotation system is completely different between the two game series, so if you're trying to do t-spins on TGM 1 and 2, you're kind of wasting your time. Cambridge with the community mod repository should have something like what you might be looking for.
it might be that Pico Tetris 2 or Extreme Tetrom are a bit easier to swallow. (don't knock A+B hold till you try it!)

πŸ”΄ we are such guidelines purists lmao
not to say that non-guidelines games suck, but man, they are so... inconsistent.
like i bet you there's one out there that has two rotation buttons, but they both rotate the piece in the same direction

I really like Bombliss/Tetris Blast; it's really satisfying to get big explosions, and I don't have to fuss as much over bad block placements since I can blow that section up and try again. And the Fight mode in Tetris Blast is really fun and creative!
