has anyone here actually heard of space station 13

Space Station 13 is a round-based social deduction game about roleplaying on a space station. Rounds usually consist of attempting to perform the job you signed up as, ranging from engineering to medical to pushing crates around for people that have ordered items from the cargo bay, while a handful of players that have been randomly chosen to play as 'antagonists' terrorise the station. Imagine if Among Us had all the mechanics of an immersive sim. It's known for being an incredibly complex game, with mechanics that have been built up over the course of the two decades since the game initially came out in 2003, and with its open-source nature many, many variations of the game have been created over the years. Most notably, there are actually quite a few furry-focused servers these days, with a character creator that could easily allow you to insert your fursona into the chaotic world of SS13, just don't get too upset when you inevitably get blown up by a bomb that a traitor planted or dragged away by a changeling to have the life sucked out of your body! Most of the time someone from medical will be able to find your corpse and revive you, and if not then I honestly find spectating the game as a ghost after dying to be just as entertaining as actually playing the game. Though, really the best part about the game in my opinion is that most servers have an emphasis on the roleplaying aspect, and you'll probably end up making a few friends in the chaos of everything going on around you. It also makes it even more of an emotional drama when your best friend ends up being the traitor and might end up having to kill you... I find these kinds of things exciting, and adds more spice than you would get just doing regular roleplaying with people. It's probably also why the game attracted so many furries in the first place.

So has anyone else here actually played the game before? It's a bit obscure, and the controls can take a lot of getting used to but I find it a very rewarding experience in the end, considering how important the game has become to me in the 6 years I've been playing it. For those of us that have given it a try, are there any particularly memorable moments that have happened to you, or even around you? Sometimes things go on that affect the entire server, or some things are just personal meaningful character interactions, but I look back on all of them fondly.

I will never forget the time that engineering became so radioactive that just walking down the hallways towards it instantly dealt 9 billion burn damage to anyone that tried to check out what the fuck just went down.

I was around when Something Awful discovered BYOND and SS13 and started going ham on it, but the UI and heavy emphasis on roleplaying deterred me. That said, I respect the hell out of its dedication to being incredibly simulationist. Just playing around with the atomspherics alone was nutso, nevermind all the things medical got up to. Just a shame it was a bit too directionless for me to enjoy.

Never played it but did see it mentioned on Youtube very often and one of my Discord friends seems to swear by that game and sometimes comes in my DMs to describe some of their sessions and that stuff sounds like a surreal trip lol

Seems to always devolves into absolute chaotic vibes but with different ways of having it happen lol, saw stuff being seeming memey but also saw some seem to make it feel like it's all out System Shock 2 lol

I vaguely recall there being a comedic 'epic reading' of the events of a Cluwne outbreak or something like that making the rounds on Tumblr, but heck if I know where to find it again.

i've seen SS13 mentioned in various places and it seems like it would be really fun, if not for the fact that i don't really know anyone else who's ever touched it and it also seems incredibly intimidating lmao

i've seen so many stories about it, most recently one about somebody scraping a bunch of ants off the floor and compressing them into a pill, which then made whoever take it explode from the inside out as ants ate them alive. like thats not the sort of anecdote you get from most videogames

that's what makes it so fun to me, it's just so unique compared to literally every other video game in existence, you could not say something so incredibly specific like the ant pill thing when talking about any other game except maybe dwarf fortress... nothing else is just nearly as in-depth as this game

it is always surreal because the kinda shit that happens in this game just doesn't happen anywhere else in video games, the closest thing i can liken it to is actually tabletop rpgs in terms of just how many specific events can happen that are kinda unique to the game systems. of course this just makes it sound crazy and outlandish all the time and it can get quite memey, but it also absolutely generates moments of quiet peace that are honestly so sweet where you're happily enjoying your time chatting with someone and this will be memorable because of a conversation you have until... all the lights go out and you're suddenly in a horror game.
