BOOK: Star Maker − Olaf Stapledon (1937)

Talk about the written (and drawn) word right here. Yes, this includes manga. Yes, this includes webcomics.

BOOK: Star Maker − Olaf Stapledon (1937)

Post by Siph »

Do you like Outer Wilds? You should read this book.

It’s personally my favorite book ever. It’s a bit hard to describe. It’s a guy whose consciousness suddenly gets transported into time and space, eventually merging consciousness with one and then more alien people along the way. It’s written in a very ethereal way and the style progresses from usual fictional narration to clinical description of people, species, places and events, and then goes completely mystical.

The book is from 1937 and yet features in its description of civilizations, very futuristic concepts that you could liken to the internet, VR, and more. It also has Dyson spheres that the literal namesake of the concept admitted to lifting from this book.

Also because it’s so old, it’s in the public domain. So you can read it right now for free in PDF form. https://www.astro.sunysb.edu/fwalter/AS ... rMaker.pdf

I don’t read a lot of books but this one definitely struck me, even though it’s a very early SF work, it’s not really among the most famous example of its genre.
