The Current

Post by Cayman »

What's brand new, or new to you? The Current is the freshest, most cutting edge music we're listening to today. What defines your moment?

Petey USA released his new album, The Yips, just yesterday. It's a mix of bedroom rock, alt-country, and even a little bit of electropop. His lyrics speak of deep social misalignment, unintended breakups, and finding one's self among all the pitfalls and pains of life. Some might call it hokey, or at worse, insincere, but there's a tinge in all his heartfelt lyrics that we can relate to. Not knowing where we're going, not sure if the people we meet along the way will help us, and a longing for true connection that we're told love will provide us, but that narrative might not fit. All wrapped up in a bit of small town Americana that speaks to the struggle without glorifying the seclusion.

Check out the title track,

The proceeding track,

I've never heard of Petey USA, but I'm definitely subscribing to them because I really enjoyed that sample platter you shared.

The latest album from Cloud Cult, "Alchemy Creek" has been therapeutic for me to deal with a lot of things in the past year and change, and to internalize some struggles better.

This is probably my favorite song from the album.

My current mini-fixation is Japanese furry singer/songwriter Totan AKA Monday9's album A Bucket of Soil (In the Future). It actually came out last year but only on an incredibly limited self-released CD run that Totan seemingly only shared with friends - it only sneakily arrived in streaming services earlier this year. I unexpectedly managed to pick up one of the CD copies in Anthrocon just gone by as it was randomly sold on the merch table of a furry music event I went to, and as a physical media guy it means I've only now started properly digging into it. Soundwise it's lovely, gentle acoustic songs perfect for lazy Sunday mornings, but there's a lot of emotional depth to the lyrics - the CD version comes with a separate sheet with all the lyrics translated to English by Totan himself, and there's definitely a lot of contrast between the calm embrace of the sound and frequent soul-searching and longing of the lyrics. It's all very, very lovely.
