Yup! The Steam Deck boots into Gaming Mode by default, which is basically Big Picture Mode from Steam.
and in the Power-Options (where you would set the system to sleep or turn it off), there's also a "Go to Desktop Mode" button that brings you to a Linux desktop that looks very much like Windows. So it should be easy to find your way around it if you're not familiar with Linux yet!

The "stream install from pc to steam deck" thing is so convenient. Sucks that it cannot be used the other way tho.

Not stream game, but rather than download from external internet, just using the local network to transfer the files between devices.

You can! I copied Street Fighter 6 over from it to my desktop the other day now that I have a drive with some actual free space on it.

Maybe this is unchecked for some reason?

OH HECK that was not usable last time I checked! Lemme see

Hmm, I have radiant silvergun installed on my steamdeck but it is not transferring from it to my pc... It is only downloading it from steam itself. Will try another.

Thanks so much! I got my steam deck literally this week and I am slowly working around the system!

I'm curious as to how many folks had like, "the one game" that they desperately wanted to see eventually become portable and now the Steam Deck lets 'em do it

For me that game was Batman: Arkham City - I'd even tried playing around with stuff like remote play on my phone but it never quite landed until the Steam Deck and now it's on Switch I guess but it's not as good

I dunno if I'd say it's the only reason I got a Steam Deck but... it was definitely a big reason ha ha ha

It even plays Knight pretty well, honestly

question:

can you use the official Gamecube controller adapter (as in, the one Nintendo made for the Wii U, specifically for Smash Bros only) on the Steam Deck without tinkering?

I know that on Linux itself, you can just use it out of the box. but either Google sucks, or I just can't really find a decisive answer that just says "Yes. When you dock the Steam Deck in any dock, you can just plug in the Gamecube controller adapter and it works without a hitch"

because I'm kinda sorta thinking about making my Steam Deck into a bit of an emulation station once I feel like getting a dock for it, and there's a bunch of Gamecube games I'd like to play on my TV that I don't want to spend ridiculous amounts of money on for the actual physical versions, so emulation it is.

Well, had mine on hand, so gave it a shot:

So it ain't gonna work for the actual OS navigation right out of the gate, but Dolphin does detect the controller and it does work for that, so if you've got another controller on hand for navigating the OS, it's all good, rumble works and everything

pog, thank you so much for checking this for me!

I was planning on setting up RetroDECK for this, does the GameCube controller adapter work with the RetroDECK user interface too? As in, can you browse your installed ROMs and ISOs with it? Or does the GC controller only work once you're actually in a game emulated with Dolphin?

That I don't know, unfortunately. My own library front-end is EmulationStation DE and it doesn't work in that, so I'm gonna assume that the main issue is that the actual application has to recognize the device specifically, seeing as the adapter doesn't pop up in SteamOS' controller list, but as soon as I enter a Dolphin instance it works perfectly. So if RetroDECK can detect the adapter just like Dolphin, it should theoretically work, but otherwise, probably not?

Ah, gotcha. :o
Still, thank you very much nonetheless! :D

It's gonna take a while until I can get a dock (and a new big microSD, the one I initially had in my Steam Deck stopped working, because it *has* been a couple years since I bought that one), so maybe once I can set this up, things may have changed in that regard there!
