Video Editing Animal Emporium

Post by RoeTheSalmon »

Hey everyone! While I've been a longtime artist, I've recently begun teaching myself a bunch of Video Editing. There's an episode of RedLetter Media where Jay mentions DaVinci Resolve, one thing lead to another, and now I'm making YTPs, shitposts, edited gameplay vids, and more, having a fun time teaching myself a bunch of silly editing tricks and techniques to get the very specific kind of shitposty humor I have in my head out into a video timeline to share with folks. Was curious if anybody else on here was into video editing. Just like a lot of other forms of art, like illustration, 3d modelling or music making, there's a lot more nuance and ways to express yourself than it appears on the surface, and finding those ways has been super fulfilling.

If any of y'all wanna see my stuff, I have a YouTube Channel here: https://www.youtube.com/@Roe_The_Salmon

Lot of VOD uploads, but a good chunk of edited stuff too. The long term ambitious goal is making longer form video essays. If you saw my post about favorite YT channels, that's probably not a surprise :)

Additionally, if you ever see something silly or weird in a vid of mine and you were wondering how exactly I did it, I'm more than glad to share. Teaching people how to make art will invariably teach me how to do it better as well, and I wouldn't have gotten as far as I am today as an artist in a lot of my disciplines if I didn't have others along the way giving me help. Shout out to Grant Abbit, if any of you are learning Blender, y'all probably know the name.

Video editing is fun! Try it!

Heck yeah, I was hoping there'd be a thread here talking about video editing! :D DaVinci Resolve has been my go-to for almost two years now, and I'd been using a pirated copy of Sony Vegas for ~3 years prior to making the switch. It's a really fun artform once you can wrap your head around it, and hearing the laughs of people watching what I make fills my sails with wind like no other.

My media tab on Bluesky (and the #mapledits tag, portmanteau of "maple" and "edits") has a bunch of the goofy stuff I make for myself outside of commissions. I'm always super happy to see people trying their hand at editing, feels like the medium and the people who use it don't always get the respect they deserve :yingblep:

As a long time lets player, I have edited more videos than I could probably ever count.

Unfortunately now that I'm on linux full time the davinci situation is dire... it doesn't support h264 at all, which is, let's face it, most videos. On windows it's different, and I still dislike it for other reasons, but it's free and prevents me from having to write AviSynth scripts.

Because it's fucking ridiculous that there's no h264 support, I had to write a quick and dirty python ffmpeg script that'll let me clip stuff from TV shows if I give it a timestamp range as an argument

Rad! Happy to hear you've found fun working with DVR. I've never tried Sony Vegas myself, though I've heard a few friends who liked the editing environment. Editing really is such a wild artform, I feel like it's something you kind of have to be into at least the slightest bit for stuff like YTPs to hit, which is unironically one of the reasons why I picked this up. Heck, I even made a Brave Little Toaster YTP a few months ago because I've always wanted to.

It's legitimately brought me to a place I haven't been to in awhile, where I really feel like I finally have a good enough understanding of this toolkit to finally make something I really have wanted to for awhile now. Hell, I finally did VO for one of my own video essay scripts. It's taught me so much, but on top of that, it's also really made me realize how capable I actually am of learning this kind of stuff. I'm so excited to make more.

Damn! I heard there was a DVR branch for it, but I'm still chained onto windows so I don't know if it's any good compared to the Windows version. Still, I'm glad you were able to make a python script to get what you wanted. Fingers crossed that you've got a better editing environment in the future!

Made a bump for fun! Was on Bumpworthy last night thinking of a lot of the older ones that stuck in my head. Go figure, most of them were the photo series in Japan. I always loved how these established a vibe in as little as 5 seconds with nothing more than a still image and a song.

Here's mine!

Gonna noodle around and make some more, but wanted to share anyways.
