Invoking his name has basically become the 2020s equivalent of "which Sonic CD soundtrack is better" in how riled up the conversation around the topic can get among fans.

I regret not getting Sonic for Neo Geo Pocket Color when it was cheaper. I was only finding standalone cartridges locally and was waiting for a complete copy, except I let it lapse -- aaaaaand wellllllll now it's not nearly as cheap.

Maybe Sega and SNK will work out some kind of digital re-release at some point? Shame it didn't seem to happen for the two NGPC collections that are out.

Retronauts 701 is regarding Sonic Fan Games; I listened to the first 23 minutes and deffo need to listen to the rest.

I'm glad that Sonic Robo Blast 2 and other fangames, like Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers, can run natively on Linux ARM, so I can play them on my Pi 5. Installed them with flatpak via Flathub. Still need to get around to really playing them, though.

And, I'm really impressed by the videos I've seen of Sonic Robo Blast 32X.

I suppose this is what I get for avoiding the fanbase (peace of mind. clear skin.)
But ultimately I get it because he represents a bit of a change of direction in what the goal of the writing is, and so he presumably gets the blame for all kinds of things that are way beyond his control

ElTipejoLoco wrote: Mon Jul 14, 2025 9:51 pm I'm gonna peek in here to say that a lot of 2006's current increased stomach-ability might be that the Xbox 360 both has since been updated to allow installing data from the disc (it didn't have this capacity when the game was originally released) AND has also become better to emulate.

Sitting through loading screens during a time when the console could potentially still suffer red-rings-of-death with a higher frequency definitely contributed, in my opinion, to its infamy. I feel like it's inevitable that more modern players will be unable to replicate the exact circumstances.

The fact that news of the devs' misfortunate circumstances and horror story was circulating at the same time also deffo contributed. That news is old now, and Sega now has at least one union amongst its employees at present.
Super late but I think the main reason 06 is getting a "redemption arc" is because of Project 06, a fan-made remake that addresses a lot of issues people had with the original game. Remakes and rereleases can do a LOT for a game's reputation. I genuinely think Sonic Adventure would be considered better than Super Mario 64 by the general public if it wasn't for Sonic Adventure DX being a terrible port that got worse with time.

Project 06 is really cool. My major gripe with it is that (last I saw) they're just not going to do the hubs or the connecting stories, just the individual levels. That's like half of the game just not included and that's a real fucking bummer.

honestly, as someone who grew up with Mario 64, I kinda wanna agree? I feel like both Sonic Adventure games need proper, well-made remasters at some point, because they do have a lot of good things going for them.

and while I am aware that you can mod the Steam ports of the Sonic Adventure games to make them play like the Dreamcast versions, at this point I'd just emulate them and spare myself all that hassle, tbh. I can live without widescreen and higher framerates, I just want them to look and play well and like originally intended.

I also find it funny when people complain about the janky camera, controls and physics of the Sonic Adventure games when Super Mario 64 is also suffering from these exact same issues, tbh.

I'll be honest, moding SADX and SA2B is extremely simple compared to a lot other games (that don't bundle mod support in the game itself). The community has done a really good job on it.

But also I don't blame you at the same time haha

I'm gonna gloss over all my positive opinions because they're pretty standard. I prefer the 2D games, Mania's probably the best of them, CD is underrated, Frontiers was neat but needs more variety next time around, and Ian Flynn should be in charge of all the game stories forever and ever.

Now for the spicy one: I really, really want another Sonic RPG more than I'd want another platformer of any kind. Obviously Bioware's probably not going to do it, so I'm not really sure who I'd want to make it. Honestly, Sonic Chronicles wasn't even that bad of a base, it's just that the execution was really off. I loved getting to swap my favorite Sonic Dudes in and out of my party, I liked how different characters had their own overworld abilities, and honestly, when it wasn't borrowing from the bad comics, the writing was pretty good, too. Having Eggman as a party member and having be Eggman the whole time was a real inspired decision.

I mean, too bad about everything else, but I think how much people liked Murder of Sonic The Hedgehog shows that people would go for a proper RPG if they, you know, did it well. Alas, Sega has this philosophy that I think has really hurt the series where anything that doesn't work the first time immediately goes in the garbage, and truth be told, I think that's generally the worst part of the series.

Also Sonic Adventure 2 is where the Dark Age began but nobody's ready to hear that from me.

i enjoyed my time with sonic chronicles, despite all the flaws (that very likely came from bioware being bought by ea) and i would love to see someone take another crack at it. hell, let atlus give it a try now that they're under sega's wing.

oh, ngl, I'd be into a well-made Sonic RPG.
I remember giving Sonic Chronicles on the DS a try, and not vibing with it at all, because for some reason, every move in battle was handled via absurdly long stylus minigames that were also incredibly easy to mess up, so I barely ever got anywhere in the game. Also, the music kinda sucked, which is *really* rare for a Sonic game, tbh.

Speaking of Ian Flynn, should I go here or the reading thread, for discussing IDW chapters? I may have a theory on what the new villain's deal is (aside from just clown/jester).
