PlayStation 2 - A console to surpass PS1

Post by Galuade »

I will post the thread about Playstation 2. Only I can fly high enough

Image

Sony's 2000 followup to the wildly successful Playstation 1, the PS2 killed the Dreamcast stone dead on release, is still the best-selling console of all time and had games coming out for it until November 2013, the same year the PS4 came out

These days there's an active homebrew scene for the PS2 with a small barrier for entry, softmoddable with an exploited memory card. The Open PS2 Loader homebrew software supports loading games from HDD, USB, Memory card, or Ethernet with good compatibility

Got a PS2 for my 12th birthday with Dark Cloud, Soulcalibur 2, Crash: Wrath of Cortex, and Seek & Destroy. To say my life was changed forever would be an understatement.

People should absolutely play Seek & Destroy. It's a Choro Q universe game where you play as a talking tank in a world of other talking vehicles (think Disney's Cars but no real anthropomorphism, just chibi vehicles who are alive). It's delightfully weird and fun.

I think I've seen someone stream a choro q game before and I was utterly bewildered

Where do you even start with the PS2? My favorite bargain bin gem I've ever found for it is S.L.A.I., the sequel to the XBox game Phantom Crash. Remote controlling customizable mechs from the comfort of your home for fun and profit and also sometimes people get murdered IRL while doing this and you've gotta solve that mystery while you're grinding for cold hard credits.

And oh my god the entire music selection is licensed and Of The Era.

The PS2, Gamecube and Wii were the only non-handheld games consoles I had until like 2019. Loved games such as Sly Raccoon, Jak II and Star Wars: Racer Revenge, but there are so many games for it and some niche ones others might have missed that I spent so much time playing as a kid were Timesplitters (the first one!) and Fur Fighters: Viggo's Revenge.

I'm sure video game nerds are familiar with Timesplitters in some way, but people usually seem to talk about the sequel which was cross-platform, rather than this first entry, which you could only enjoy here. It was made by a new company comprised of many staff of Rare who'd worked on Goldeneye and Perfect Dark - and you can feel it in the gameplay. I'd say if someone remembers the multiplayer for those games fondly but finds getting into the N64 to have too many hurdles, get a PS2 and Timesplitters, The multiplayer is very similar indeed! The single player is also fun; not quite so story-focused as Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, it feels nudged a little bit towards something like Quake III Arena; you're just kind of dropped into a scenario where you have to achieve an objective, without much direct connection between each. But it does continue the same kind of style of missions as Goldeneye and Perfect dark, where you typically have to infiltrate some enemy base and retrieve something and then reach some goal point. And it has a really memorable sense of style, soundtrack, and even sound effects, heheh! And also, an extremely excellent level constructor! That's what I spent most of my time on it doing as a kid!

Fur Fighters: Viggo's Revenge is a port from the ill-fated Dreamcast, but much improved, with a new cell-shaded style, voice acting, and an extra level, and other small areas of polish. It's like Banjo-Kazooie with guns heheh, and third-person shooting segments between fun platforming challenges. And also revolves around swapping between six different characters, each with a unique special ability, and their own babies that only they can save! It's so cute and toony with a great sense of humour, and deftly juggles action with slower platforming and puzzle moments. Very recommended for furry friends :D

So many cool and incredibly quirky games for the PS2, a very fun system to explore!

And here's the rest of my PS2 collection for good measure; just picked up SSX Tricky today! :3 (Should be able to enlarge and zoom in to read all the titles hehe)

I genuinely think that Sony peaked with the PS2. It's such a solid console with a huge and extensive library with classics such as the TimeSplitters trilogy, Okami, Katamari Damacy, Bully, Sly Cooper, Shadow of the Colossus, and Burnout (my hot take is that Burnout Revenge is better than Takedown - crashing into same-way traffic is fantastic, Crash Mode is better polished, the aftertouch and self-destruct mechanics are excellent additions, and the soundtrack is killer). Recently, I've dipped in and out of San Andreas, which I have a love-hate relationship with (love driving around the map, listening to the radio, and playing dress up with CJ, hate doing the actual missions)

It's also the only console of which I possess two, since I bought a second-hand replacement after my original PS2 stopped reading discs altogether (I tried opening it up to see if the laser could be cleaned or adjusted, but eventually gave up because opening it up and making trial-and-error corrections is such a palaver). I much prefer the slim model to the fat model, since it runs much quieter and the disc drive has a lid rather than a motorised tray that'll eventually wear out. The only problem is that the CMOS battery is completely flat and ought to be replaced, but I also don't mind spending a couple of seconds manually setting the clock whenever I switch it on.

I have three >:3

Honestly swapping the battery on the ps2 is a colossal pain in the ass because it's on the motherboard and you have to do a full teardown of the console to get to it. at least it's a standard cr2032 in a battery holder and not soldered to the board or something

Can't help but notice you didn't mention the Onimusha series, which I have been extolling the virtues for as long as I can remember. I'm so happy the series has been getting remasters so I new generation can enjoy them. I can only hope they continue to do so with 3 and Dawn of Dreams. When they announced Way of the Sword I literally screamed, much to the chagrin of everyone in the discord call.

There's just so many good and weird PS2 games out there. It also happens to just have a shitton of mecha games, which I absolutely love...

Robot Alchemic Drive is one of my favorite fumblecore games on PS2. It's trash, but in the most affectionate way possible. Controlling a giant mech as a pedestrian in the gameworld and having to maneuver the mech and its opponent away from possibly crushing you was SUCH A CHOICE.

Gundam vs. Zeta Gundam was another one of my favorites. Had an entire timeline mode where you could fuck around with how events played out during the One Year War and Gryps Conflict. I loved it a lot.

And the continuing Armored Core series shined during the PS2 era, there were just so MANY games... 2, Another Age, 3, Silent Line, Ninebreaker, Nexus, Last Raven... all good shit.

Single-player experiences aside, the PlayStation 2 was my introduction to somwhat more complex online multiplayer (as opposed to things like ye olde Furcadia and Graal Online) with things like The Bouncer's support for its multitap, alongside Final Fantasy XI and Resident Evil Outbreak's support and reliance on its combo hard disk drive and ethernet capable modem accessory.

I always wish I got to experience this game. The idea of multiple people running around in a classic RE game just speaks to me. I suck at these games, but it'd be super fun to tackle it with others.

Yeah, the brief time its GameSpy(I think?)-based servers were active I used to boot it up and give it a shot. It was also one of the first instances of a game having a sort of async-competitive mechanic prior to people becoming convinced Demon's Souls made it, where if you died early you would eventually get to come back as a zombie that could potentially terrorize anyone on the same floor elevation or below as you (or help them break down locked doors very slowly by attacking them until they opened).

Playing with strangers who you could only really communicate mid-play session with a limited scope of quick-chat commands that may or may not have accompanying voice lines was a bit of a mess to coordinate back then, though. Still, it was a fun time.

I played a bit of this after you posted about it and I'm, frankly, blown away I had never heard of it before. It's so fucking cool. The presentation, the gameplay, the MUSIC, it's all so perfect. This deserves to be a well renowned classic.
