VR Gameing

Okay sure maybe you’ve got the coolest VR Chat avatar in the world, but tonight nobody else is online, or you’ve got a sore throat, or you don’t even wanna think about Unity after it crashed and took out two hours of work. What else do you play?

RUNNER is a super fun cyberpunk motorcycle-riding gun-shooting action game. (It’s only on the Meta store and PSVR for now…) Balancing not crashing into cars while trying to line up shots on flying gun-drones and other motorcycles is super fun, and like many shmups, a lot of the challenge is routing where exactly you want to use your bullet-time to clear the field. I loved it so much I wrote a GameFAQs guide for it!

Until You Fall is about the closest VR can get to a character action game, and it’s a great workout—-ducking and weaving around a skeleton’s slashes then coming back with a big flurry of sword attacks feels amazing! There’s not a ton of content, but what’s there is great, and I really love it.

95% of my VR time is VRC, but I did enjoy Until You Fall and Tetris Effect.

The best VR experience though was Wipeout Omega Collection for PSVR and I'm really sad it's not on PC.

If you have any sort of affinity for firearms, Hot Dogs, Horseshoes, and Hand Grenades is absolutely the game for you.

It's got like 500+ guns in at the moment and a variety of different modes to futz around with fairly realistic models of guns.

It's basically the only other VR game I play other than VRChat now.

COMPOUND is also fun times if you like your shooties to be retro flavored.

I highly recommend the A Fisherman's Tale games. They're a little on the shorter side in terms of playthrough time, so if money is a concern I would wait for a good sale or bundle. They're perspective focused puzzle games where you look "down" into a model of the lighthouse you're in, and you can manipulate objects big and small that way.

It's not overly difficult, but it really benefits from the sense of scale you get with VR.

If you're in the mood for something a bit more violent and visceral, Blade & Sorcery can be hella addicting. It's also got extensive mod support. Want more magic? You got it. Weapons from Final Fantasy? Yup, mod for that. Maybe you're a Star Wars nerd like me and want to experience lightsabers and blasters? There's a mod for that too!

I really, really recommend Moss and the direct sequel, Moss: Book II.

Both games are slightly different than the standard VR fare, in that you as the player are not the main character of the action. In fact, you control the main character, but you do so from a third person perspective. At the same time, you the player are in fact a character in the game, observing and manipulating the action from afar. It's very well done, and it works much better than I'm making it sound. Despite way the game is structured, the VR is really used very well, and all the environments are gorgeous and immersive.

The game also has a delightful story that's very well told. It's got some serious Redwall vibes to it - A story about a tiny mouse going on a big adventure.

It's far from the experience you'd get with something like SuperHot or Beat Saber, but it's an excellent time that shows how judicious and thoughtful use of VR can go a long way to enrich a narrative and build a connection to the characters in the story.

You're not wrong!! The little mouse is remarkably adorable, and given the nature of the game, it's very easy to get emotionally invested in her journey. I had more than a few moments where I was terrified for the danger she was in.

Regardless of that, I will say that the story and the game are a delight! But you absolutely have a very good point. This game does involve very cute critters that experience peril.

Yeah, VRC is probably my most played.
I still love Super Hot VR as far as an action game fair.

RE4 VR is surprisingly very good too if you are into that (and sadly only on the facebook vr).
It lets you catch fish and juggle them.

I have played quite a few anime VR games that are all mixed.
Gungrave, Spice & Wolf, Laid Back Camp, etc. Little Witch Academia racing is probably the best of those I played.
(There are a few others but they are so focused on 1 on 1 being with an anime girl I didn't play them)
