Bees Games and Art

Post by Bee »

Wanted to make a thread for posting art and games and stuff that I make!

My main project right now is a game called Stomp and the Sword of Miracles, a metroidvania where you must save the world from the god of chaos. It takes a lot of inspiration from Kirby, Hollow Knight, and Rain World. It's probably my most ambitious project ever and there's a good chance I won't make a game of this scale again because WOW this is going to take forever to finish. It's been a lot of fun to work on, and the characters of this world mean a lot to me! If this looks neat, there's a Steam page where you can wishlist it. I'm aiming to get a demo out for this in the next couple months!!

Another game I'm working on is an atmospheric horror game called Moonrot where you play as a little space rover collecting data on a mysterious alien planet. I'm really excited about this one because I've wanted to make a horror game for years now, but it's on the backburner for now cuz I'm in the middle of recovering from burnout and most of my energy is going towards Stomp right now.

Wow, these both look so impressive!! I'm always so amazed by gamedevs; I can't imagine having to both code and make all the assets for a game, so much respect for people who do it!!

It's also really cool how both are so stylistically different! You seem really adept at both 3d and 2d art :]

Thank you!! It's... definitely very time consuming doing all the art and programming. Sometimes I want to make something look better but need to be okay with it being just good enough, otherwise this thing's gonna take twice as long to make.

As for 3D... I barely know what I'm doing!! I'd avoided touching 3D for so long because I know I'm not very good at it and I wouldn't be able to make very good looking character models, but I decided a game like this would be a good place to start. You don't need to worry about things looking organic and being rigged and stuff when you're just a chunky boxy space probe!

Thanks! I'm working in Godot for both of these. I used Unity for my last game, Frogsong, but over the past 5 years Unity has had controversy over controversy and I just kinda want nothing to do with them at this point. Godot has its share of quirks, but I think I'm ultimately enjoying it more.

Also speaking of how Moonrot is rendered, here's a zoomed in full quality screenshot to show the crunchy dithering the game has too

Both of these games look really intriguing with the way their presentation that is being done. ::o

Moonrot is especially gearing up to look like it will be hitting a very special kind of intense haunting feeling, can already see it building up as you progress the game. It reminds me of the game Iron Lung in a way with the mechanic of taking photos, to reveal the limited view, a very good mechanic that's great to see! It feels like an aspect that we really need to see more, and the way you're pulling it off makes it feel very exciting. The stylised PS1 graphics make it feel like it can bring out some very interesting details depending on whatcha take a photo of, love it all. ::>

As for Stomp, it looks like it is definitely going to be an extremely large adventure knowing how far metroidvanias tend to go! The vibrance in the art style, with the colours and environments standing out so well, it looks extremely fun. All the critters look fantastic, I adore the hermit crab and the lava fish the most! ;;w;;

Thank you! The little creatures are one of my favourite parts of working on this. There's plenty of enemies, but I want there to be a good amount of creatures you interact with in non-combat ways.

Today I actually worked on a new creature:

I'm calling them bubble frogs for now until I come up with a better name. This is one of the things I especially love working on... little "background" creatures that are just a part of the environment. Code-wise, these guys are incredibly simple - they just wait a random length of time before chirping, and hop away when something gets too close. But the random wait length and the fact that there's two different lengths of chirping animation adds a lot to making them feel like real creatures.

The inclusion of just ambient background animals is a really nice touch! The random off-pattern chirping sells it the most just cause they feel authentically enough to be doing their own thing, even if the animations and logic behind it is very simple. The slight differences in the way they make their noises do a great job of it as well. ::3

Names are definitely the toughest parts! Probably has to depend on the way all the other animals and enemies will be named, especially if there's any themes going on. Something will be good for these little forest croakers. ::B

today i saw the error of my ways and added big mushroom
big mushroom ...........
big mushroom ...........
I also redid the art for the trees in the background. The previous ones had been bugging me for a while and just felt a little plain to me. I might even fuck around and make the green area's trees even mossier.
