Talk about the written (and drawn) word right here. Yes, this includes manga. Yes, this includes webcomics.

Marvel Comics thread - Let's see how they ruined Spider-Man this week

One of the "Big 2" of western comic companies. Often credited with paving the way for the modern superhero genre between some truly wild and imaginative art and ideas from industry legends like Jack Kirby, or a much bigger focus on making their super beings more human than their contemporaries with relatable personal struggles and a deeper look into the personal lives of the heroes when they're not punching Dr. Doom in the face.

The company used to have a diverse list of series and genres however, they soon chose to focus mostly on superhero comics creating some of the most iconic characters in the medium such as Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, The Incredible Hulk, and Captain America to name a few.

Nowadays, the company is mostly known for their movie division though the original comics are still here and doing fairly well in spite of the state the western comics market has been in since the late 90s. And of course there's plenty of cartoons, TV shows, video games, and even a small handful of manga collaborations.

As for ongoing comic series from them that I'd recommend:
  • Immortal Thor written by Al Ewing
  • Fantastic Four written by Ryan North
  • Ultimate Spider-Man written by Jonathan Hickman
  • Jeff the Landshark written by Kelly Thompson
There's also an event called Imperial written by Jonathan Hickman that is currently ongoing that I would recommend reading as Marvel's space stories are far less prone to having to adhere to a status quo.
In addition there are currently crossover series going on with Predator (Predator vs Spider-Man) and Godzilla (Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe).

I'm not as invested in superheroes comics and movies nowadays, but I've been told that the new Ultimate series is actually pretty rad and kind of a good starting point for new readers.

That's definitely the case. I haven't read all the series in it. Mostly its introductory event and the Spider-Man series, but between being it's own new universe free from any past stories or events, and having some excellent writing courtesy of Johnathan Hickman, they are a great jumping on point for new readers right now.

Aside from that, the Fantastic Four series I listed earlier just had a relaunch, so that is also a good place to jump in on that series since it tells you everything you need to know to understand whats happening and also has some great writing and characterization.
