All Time Favorites
Nostalgic, groundbreaking, those songs you've heard all your life but will never leave you. This is what music is for.

I'm not actually much of Tea Party fan, but this song lowkey haunts me ever since I first heard it.

Re: All Time Favorites
Maybe it's because it's just so incredibly trans-coded, but when asked for a song that feels like it's been most affecting to me since I first heard it, my mind always goes to Shield by Girls Rituals.
Noise-pop really is peak when it comes to conveying raw emotional pain, I think.

Re: All Time Favorites
Maybe a bit more subtle, but this was a song that meant a lot to me when I was questioning/coming out. I didn't have much at the time.

Re: All Time Favorites
If there is one song that has had the most impact in my life, it's Manic Street Preachers' "If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next". Back when I was a kid, I basically only listened to bangers - if a song wanted my acceptance it had to be energetic and it had to be upbeat, and I'd skip every single ballad (and most mid-tempos) in the Now-style compilations I mostly listened to at the time.
Then this track just appears out of nowhere in 1998 and completely rewires my brain. It's sad, it's aching, it's decidedly not a banger, but it hits me. I don't understand most of the words or the meaning (non-native English speaker here) but the haunting emotion just grips me, and the wordless vocals of the outro didn't even need to cross the language barrier to sound so powerful. It opened a whole new world of music for me and the next several years would find me digging deeper into indie and alt rock, full of that pre- and post-millennium anxiety, shaping my music taste massively. It also spiralled me deeper into the Manics' back catalogue and if there's one band that defines my teens, it's the Manics.
Timelessly incredible piece of music, to my ears. The album it's from, 1998's This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours, has a strong claim to be my favourite album of all time as well.

A fantastic song from a phenomenal album! It's a cliché but "Chicago" from the same album hits me in the feels massively every single time.Cayman wrote: Sun Jul 13, 2025 11:45 am Maybe a bit more subtle, but this was a song that meant a lot to me when I was questioning/coming out. I can thank my dad for introducing me to Meat Loaf (and by extension Jim Steinman) at a rather young age.

Squarepusher's Go Plastic is an album that taught me the joy of letting jittery, harsh, playful, electric noise do things to your brain and still lives close to my heart. All made without the use of a PC, just fun button n' knob boxes.

Re: All Time Favorites
This was the song that got me into Celldweller (as it did a lot of folks), unfortunately the remix that I heard specifically on Newgrounds has been lost to me. I don't know if its even still there, it probably is, but I can't seem to find it. It was in like a geometry dash knock off back in like... 2009-ish? I know this song was in Dead Rising but I found it through Newgrounds.

Re: All Time Favorites
There are a lot of songs I could shout here, but I think the one that's stuck the most with me thru my life thus far has been MGMT's "Time to Pretend". It was a constant motivator that helped me keep my eyes on the horizons and my spirits up through some of the most difficult years of my life; the way they used vulgarity and lyrical outlandishness to belie a really uplifting message that "Change will happen whether you want it or not, so take it as it comes and do your best within your own means" has always connected with me. It'll always have a place dear to my heart.

i've been a huge fan of stratovarius ever since i discovered them in high school, and the song i found them through (as well as power metal as a whole), hunting high and low, is still one of my absolute favorite songs of all time! still find it to be an absolutely kickass song that never fails to motivate me when i'm feeling rough

i HAVE to mention willyrod here, fell in love with all of their music as soon as i heard it and permanently altered my taste in music entirely. i think partially because at the time i found this artist i was going through major changes in my life, having just left high school and finally developing maturity and my personal interests/personality. still to this day one of my favorite artists and i still listen to many of their songs to this day
here's the first song i ever heard, and definitely still one of my favorite songs of all time

Re: All Time Favorites
i skimmed this very briefly and am immediately blasted into space, this whips. will give it a full listen when i get a chance!!
i'm an album kinda girl so i definitely think of music in 30-60 minute chunks instead of individual songs. and the one that i can go back to at any time is (stay with me here) Covered in Gas by Evil Cowards.
This is a long walk but: the lead singer of Electric Six, Dick Valentine, made this album with the guy who is known as Fall On Your Sword. I am a certified freak for E6, so any Dick Valentine side project is gonna capture me. I think his lyrics are so bizarre and full of layered, stupid jokes that I can't help but be obsessed. And Fall On Your Sword made one of my favorite early meme songs, so I knew it was gonna be great.
The first time I listened to this album i hated it. The music was weird and the vocals were sung mostly in this bizarre falsetto. But I kept repeating it for reasons I still can't explain.
let me tell you: this album is so dense with jokes and weird lyrics that it captured my brain so thoroughly and I could not stop listening to this album for weeks. This is the only album that i've memorized all of the lyrics to, top to bottom. It's so good. Take "Sex Wars" for example, a song about a war where, I guess, people have sex with their compatriots instead of killing the enemy:
like, what does that mean??? it's so weird. it's so weird. every song is like this.We were all in this together
It was just like Vietnam
Except with a whole lot more leather
And a whole lot less napalm
(less napalm)
Anyway that's probably more than enough about this one album. but it's been out for >10 years and i listened to it yesterday, and it felt just as good as it always has. love this album...

Glass Beach - Yoshi's Island
This might be my favorite song ever. The way I interpret it is that it's about being rejected by your family and society for being trans, internalizing that, but then finding someone who loves you for who you are.

Re: All Time Favorites
shocking we've had no mention of Car Seat Headrest here yet - i may be a bit biased as i've played Bodys with the frontman to a packed room full of folks but i genuinely think the band version of CSH is one of the best working rock bands in the USA and in the world at large. while over the years my favorites have shifted, and Twin Fantasy is probably their best album, this is easily my favorite song off their latest and one of my all time favorite songs of theirs.
Re: All Time Favorites
Despite being a furry and a big indie music nerd, I was surprisingly late to the CSH hype train. It was only maybe a year ago that I sat down and actually listened to Twin Fantasy front to back. Bodys was the song that made me sit up and go “oh, this is something special.” Excellent song.1234567 wrote: Wed Jul 16, 2025 3:00 pm shocking we've had no mention of Car Seat Headrest here yet - i may be a bit biased as i've played Bodys with the frontman to a packed room full of folks but i genuinely think the band version of CSH is one of the best working rock bands in the USA and in the world at large. while over the years my favorites have shifted, and Twin Fantasy is probably their best album, this is easily my favorite song off their latest and one of my all time favorite songs of theirs.
I know the proceeding albums weren’t as well received critically, but I think Making a Door Less Open is a brilliant album in its own right, and Deadlines (Thoughtful) crept into my psyche for quite a while.

I recently got The Scholars on vinyl, and let me tell you that listening to it on that medium while following along with the liner notes completely recontextualizes the whole album. It’s beautiful.

vylet pony is like my favourite music artist ever right now and normally since i love listening to full albums i would be like 'oh go to listen to the entirety of Carousel or Monarch of Monsters they're only both over an hour long' but if i had to pick just one song to show off it would probably be this

sing a song about life
