The Soul Zone

Post by 1234567 »

Hey all! I figured I’d start a soul thread. Anything goes as long as it’s soul inflicted.

Recent listens:

The Daptone Super Soul Revue LIVE at the Apollo (recorded 2014, released 2021)
This live album features the majority of the Daptone Records roster c. 2014, before either of their major stars - Miss Sharon Jones and Charles Bradley - passed. 2 hours of high energy fun. Blasted it at my job yesterday, and many customers and even my coworkers were dancing along. If you don’t like this record, you might as well have no soul. It ends with a fantastic cover of Sly and the Family Stone’s “Family Affair”, that everyone gets in on.

Alabama Shakes - Dunes (off Sound and Color, 2015)
Brittany Howard is a visionary. Between this and her solo material, I just adore everything she writes. She brings this classic rock and roll “fuck you” attitude to everything she does and this track is no exception. Peep the whole album if you dig it.

Geese - I See Myself (off 3D Country, 2023)
Geese are one of the best working rock bands of the modern day, and I find myself utterly captivated by their blend of classic rock worship, soul-inflicted grooves, and wild & progressive experimentation. Although it’s much more of a rock record, this particular cut is a soul track. Check both it and frontman Cameron Winter’s more folk-inclined LP “Heavy Metal” from late last year.

Michael Kiwanuka - Love & Hate (off Love & Hate, 2016)
Michael Kiwanuka has long been one of my favorite artists in the genre and someone who has continually inspired me with his intense artistic vision, ear for incredible arrangements, and creative and emotive lyricism. This is bar none my favorite song by him. I don’t have anything more to say, just listen.

Isaac Hayes - Something (off The Isaac Hayes Movement, 1970)
Isaac Hayes may be better known in more recent times for his voicing of Chef from South Park and his falling out with the creators over his religious choices (he’s in Scientology), but a long time before I was even put on this Earth, he was a fantastic musician. This is a Beatles cover, and I’m a sucker for them in almost any context.

That’s all for me, just wanted to kickstart discussion on here about this :) I love music and talking about it hehe
