[BOOK] Discworld
[BOOK] Discworld
Upon recommendation from a friend a while back, I started getting into the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett. I'm 3/4 of the way through the third book (Equal Rites) and I'm absolutely loving the wit, the worldbuilding, and the sheer creativity. Anyone else a fan?

I've always wanted to read a few! A few people have recommended Guards, Guards! to me over the years, but I'm the type of person to read an entire series~

Re: [BOOK] Discworld
having made my way through every discworld book a few months back I can safely say they are all worth reading
granted the early ones are a little bland and I don’t rate the rincewind books particularly highly out of all of them, but the rate of hits to misses is unmatched tbh
can’t go wrong with the witches or guard books though, there’s some incredible character development in those

I'll have to find more! I absolutely loved the first two books.

Re: [BOOK] Discworld
oh yeah they're not bad by any means its just like. as the series goes on terry moves away from spoofing (at the time of publishing) generic fantasy and the series finds its own voice, so to speak
as an aside, the tv versions that Sky TV put out of Going Postal and The Hogfather are well worth watching, as is the cartoon of Wyrd Sisters. there was an adaptation of Soul Music that had Cristopher Lee as the voice of Death which seems like an inspired choice to me but i have yet to legally watch that one

Re: [BOOK] Discworld
I found that I loved the Guards storyline a lot, and the audiobooks for it were absolutely top notch too
When I was recommended it, I was told not to read it in release order, but to pick a storyline that sounded neat and follow it. So Nightwatch and Death it was

I keep meaning to read these, but I started with one of the Rincewind novels and fell off pretty quickly. Not that it was bad, but the character wasn't particularly interesting.

Re: [BOOK] Discworld
That was my issue as well, that was about when I was told to not read release order because his early work is rough and even Pratchett recognized that. From what I hear it seemed like he was embarrassed by his first bookRueAzure wrote: Mon Jul 14, 2025 3:06 pm I keep meaning to read these, but I started with one of the Rincewind novels and fell off pretty quickly. Re: [BOOK] Discworld
i'd also heard about the "don't read it in published order" thing but that was after i was already like 20 books in so i figured i may as well keep going with it lol
i don't really think you lose anything by reading it in a particular way because then you get some more background on stuff or people who appear in earlier books but not necessarily earlier in a "series" so to speak
