the turn-based spin-off series of the main Monster Hunter games where you get the monsters as party members!

I decided to make a thread for specifically the Stories games, since they are pretty different in terms of gameplay and vibes compared to the mainline Monster Hunter games. I was thinking about also making a thread for the main MonHun games too, but I feel like I wouldn't be the right person to do so, considering how I only really got into the mainline games with MonHun Wilds.

Anyways, speaking of MonHun Stories, a lot of people compare them to Pokemon (because of the creature collecting aspect), but I dunno, I feel like the games do enough differently so that you can't just write them off as a Pokemon rip-off.

The battle system is based on a rock-paper-scissors style thing with attacks being based on Power, Speed or Technical. Generally enemy monsters and your Monsties (yes, that's what your monster party members are called) attack on their own depending on what species they are. For example, a Nargacuga, for instance, generally goes for Speed attacks. A Royal Ludroth, on the other hand, tends to go for Power attacks.
You can tell your monsties to use specific attacks in battle, but that uses up some of your energy you have charged up in your Kinship Gauge, which is a resource that you also spend in order to mount your monstie to use an even stronger special attack during battle.

It's definitely a bit strange to wrap your head around, especially if you're more used to other monster collecting RPGs like Pokemon or Shin Megami Tensei, but once you got it down, it's actually pretty neat!

So, who else here has played the MonHun Stories games? And are you excited for Monster Hunter Stories 3, which has already been confirmed to release on March 13th 2026! I know I am, because I really like the monster designs of the MonHun games, and I'm a sucker for turn-based RPGs!

i haven't played them that much and really should finish them at some point, but after picking stories 2 up in a sale for dirt cheap and not really expecting much of it since i don't really play monster catchers, i ended up really liking it lmao. turns out, i just don't enjoy pokemon games

i ended up grabbing stories 1 for my steamdeck and thats a perfect fit there as far as i'm concerned. the battle system is fun once you figure it and a monsters tendencies out and the monster designs are all very good since its monster hunter, and its nice to team up with a monster for a change instead of just battering them all with hammers for 70 hours
