It's Critter Time!

does anyone like the shoegaze genre?? ive been really liking japanese shoegaze bands like mass of the fermenting dregs, uchu nekoko, my dead girlfriend, and kinoko teikoku. i do also enjoy my bloody valentine, slowdive, and cocteau twins. if anyone has any recommendations for shoegaze, id love to listen to them!! oh and if you want any song recommendations that would be awesome too ^_^

Oh you're speaking my language. Check out Burrrn, Shojoskip, and Oeil.

For American shoegaze, definitely check out Drop Nineteens, specifically the album Delaware.

To elaborate a bit, Cosodorokitsune by Shojoskip is one of my all time favorite albums. Probably leads more into postrock than straight shoegaze but you might like it.



Burrrn is more classic Japanese shoegaze. Super crunchy and ethereal.

I would be remiss if I didn't give a shout-out to BDRMM. They've been moving away a bit further from shoegaze each album and leaning heavier into more electronic, dream pop esque soundscapes, but their growth has been consistently excellent. Their 2023 album I Don't Know is a great mix of both of their worlds, but I would massively recommend this year's Microtonic for anyone who enjoyed the latest Slowdive album - lots of similar ethereal electronic waves.

Check out blurred city lights from Nagoya. Japanese shoegaze with wall of sound and female vocals. I spent an embarrassingly large amount of money to get the CD imported to me.




I discovered Walrus about a year ago too, also from Japan. One of the most unique sounds in the scene and the album's like 25 years old now. Also got the vinyl for a good amount of money.

If you're a complete shoegaze newbie, it's worth just checking some of the Shoegaze 101 material, namely My Bloody Valentine's Loveless (1991) and Slowdive's Souvlaki (1993). May not be 100% what you're after (and IMO Slowdive's post-comeback records i.e. the self-titled onwards are better than their 90s material), but it's where a lot of the aesthetics of the genre stem from so worth it just to check out.

I also want to give a personal shout-out to Airiel's Winks & Kisses 4-EP set (2004). Glacial, ethereal, dreamy, but also super catchy. Zoned-out blissfully into "In Your Room" so many times...

I've been told Alcest fit the Shoegaze descriptor as well, although I've always seen them more through a Post Black Metal lens myself...

It's called blackgaze and Alcest basically invented it. Deafheaven is probably the most popular group in that scene, and the albums I heard from them are good like Sunbather, New Bermuda, and Lonely People with Power.

If yr looking for something a little "crunchier" Pinkshinyultrablast by Astrobrite is wonderful. Really crushes you under its sound, while still being pop-y.



Also bloweyelashwish by lovesliescrushing. Still very noisy, but it's more on the dreamy side. It's got some great interlude tracks as well, all sorts of sonic experiments and landscapes.

I've been digging the recent album by a band called Pink Breath of Heaven. This track "Blue Is the Morning" is a nice psychedelic shoegaze groove.
