Playstation, the PSX

Claiming the thread for my favorite console ever, the Playstation.

I know y'all know about the Playstation, so I'm going to kick the thread off with some of my favorite games on the system.

Metal Gear Solid

Image

Everyone knows Metal Gear Solid. It's #10 on the top selling Playstation games list (on wikipedia). What I want to talk about is Integral, a (once) Japanese exclusive rerelease. This version has two very interesting features that are great for veterans looking for an interesting replay. Both of these are available once you clear the game once on the Integral save file.

The first of these is First Person Mode. In this mode, as you might have guessed, you can play the entire game in first person. You can toggle between first person and the regular camera in game in cases where you might need to, but I think it's fun to stay in first person for long as possible.

The second special mode is Arrange Mode. This mode remixes guard and item layouts and is perfect for someone like me who wants to play the game again and disengage auto pilot. Check it out when you get the chance, it really breathes new life into everything.

King's Field

Image

King's Field is the first video game release by From Software. It's also the first RPG on the Playstation. It's where the mind boggling effects skeletons are from. You've seen those guys, right?

King's Field is slow, methodical, ugly, and weird. It's everything I want in a video game, and I'm sure I'm not alone in that. It requires patience, thoughtfulness, attention, notes. The combat is sluggish and deliberate. The exploration is beautiful and maddening. Please don't look up a guide or a map if you can avoid it. The game is designed surprisingly well for self discovery.

My first time playing was during the early work-from-home era in 2020. I worked at a call center and the days were fuckin' slow. We were often waiting a full hour between calls, so I booted up King's Field. I spent the first few hours in the smallest area of the map, not realizing I was going in circles. I thought I was lost deep in a maze of walls that all looked the exact same, but really I had just been walking in circles around the same few turns. Once I realized that, I was in love. I hope you can find space in your heart for it too.

Tail Concerto

Image

You're on a board made by retro game loving furries. You've heard of this game. But on the insane off chance that you haven't, Tail Concerto is a retro game about furries.

You play as Officer Waffle, a cop in a mech called in on his day off to stop kittens from exploding warehouses. From there, it evolves into a world trekking adventure involving an ancient weapon of terror.

This is the first game by CyberConnect2 of .hack// and Naruto fighting game fame. They're a dev team full of furries who lately have been making the series about shooting furry children out of an eldritch tank cannon. Those games, the Fuga games, are incredibly sad, but Tail Concerto (which shares the same universe as Fuga, the Little Tail Bronx universe) is very silly and funny and cute. If you haven't played it, you need to. If you don't you might have your retro gamer furry card revoked. I don't make the rules.

Those are my recommendations for now. I'll almost certainly return with more. I hope you can keep up.

It's so funny that CC2 went from two games about adorable furries piloting mechs to help their communities (we won't talk about the whole "Red is actually a human" thing from Solatorobo) to adorable furries piloting mechs in the face of absolute genocide.

I really do need to play through Fuga now that the third one is out, I've only played halfway through the first one.

FMVs with chunky CGI, I love it. Is that Foo Fighters providing the soundtrack or am I mistaken?

I might be stupid. That sounds like Pearl Jam, but like, a sped up version of Even Flow?

Its "Shade" by Feeder

fun fact: this games licensed song or lack of one is dependent on region. Prefer the Japanese version because it plays this AGAIN during the final boss fight.

I was worried Lolo might've beaten me to it, but if you're a PSX enjoying, you just GOTTA play Silent Bomber by CC2.

You play as Jutah FATE, a war criminal who is sent on a suicide mission with other criminals to blow up a gigantic spaceship and prevent it from destroying the world. It has a lot of explosions, a lot of cutscenes and a bitchin' OST.

There is also a VS mode where you can unlock a Tail Concerto character.

If there's anyone that's going to talk about Silent Bomber, it's gotta be you.

We never grew up with a Playstation 1 so there's so many games we haven't gotten to yet, and honestly a lot of big names that we didn't enjoy much. However it's a wonderful console with a lot of cool stuff. The Namco Museum titles are the gold standard forever.

Also, Little Ralph recently got translated and that thing is just wild. A very tough platformer with a very particular mood as it gets increasingly upsetting and violent, and also a bunch of the bosses are fighting game fights.

Back with some more recommendations.

Ghost in the Shell
Image

GitS on Playstation is a third person action shooter type deal by the folks behind Jumping Flash! (I've been told it's on the same engine) It's 6 or 7 levels long and just an absolute blast. Not too hard, but very interesting, since you can drive your tachikoma tank up on the walls and ceilings. Also if you like playing with your legal back ups on emulators such as Duckstation, you can overclock the cpu to run the game at a solid 60 fps with no change in the speed of the gameplay.

Tail of the Sun
Image

Here's a weird one from Artdink. It's also one I've never heard anyone else talk about besides my boyfriend who recommended it to me. Tail of the Sun is a simulation/survival game where you play little cave men and women, hunt down animals, eat meat and fruit, and gather bones. You do all this to build a tower tall enough to touch the sun, to catch its tail. It's a very literal title. Read the manual, you'll need it.

Remote Control Dandy
Image

From what I've been able to find, Remote Control Dandy was made by Human, who went bankrupt shortly after its release and reformed as Sandlot. Sandlot then went on to make Robot Alchemic Drive and the Earth Defense Force series. Remote Control Dandy is a lot like RAD, so if you like that I suggest trying this. For those than aren't familiar, you control a child of the director of a defense agency that build a giant robot to fight against other giant robots. You control your robot remotely and have you position your own child body in places where you can see the action. You also have to avoid as much collateral damage as possible to maintain public trust and funding. Hopefully that's enough to get you in the door. If you try it I doubt you'll be disappointed.

Funnily enough I was just reading an interview with the Director of Tail of the Sun last night. He describes how it was a reaction to seeing how slick and smooth Mario 64 was. The jank is very deliberate.

It's also kind of a personality test of a game. You can spend a while exploring for weird stuff, leveling up, and getting the different endings... or just learn to circle around mammoths and beat the game in one sitting and be done with it.

The PS1 largely passed me by despite having a PS2 I could have played the games on, but I played some Crash Bandicoot and Tekken as a kid. Oh, and The Misadventures of Tron Bonne too of all games xP

But I've collected up a small number of games, and I've recently picked an actual PS1, and modded an X-Station into it, so I'll be able to check all the games out!!

Everyone should check out Kingsley's Adventure right this moment. (Not biased at all ¦3)

Kingley's Adventure is so good! I was playing it last year and got pretty far but ran into a game breaking bug that caused a 100% consistent hard crash. I really want to return to it soon.
