Re: Bap The Buttons! A Rhythm Game Thread
I have long, complex thoughts about rhythm games. But I like playing DDR. I think everyone should play no bar doubles.

Re: Bap The Buttons! A Rhythm Game Thread
Did someone say rhythm games?
I got my start in O2Jam Online, an extremely popular (at the time) rhythm game made in South Korea in 2002. Sadly now it's a shell of its former self but it got me into the world of rhythm games when I was young and impressionable.
Then I hopped to the PSP and the DJ Max series. DJ Max Portable Black Square remains one of my absolute favourite rhythm games, then 3, then 2 in that order.
Couldn't get into arcade rhythm games because they cost money and arcades were loud, overstimulating places that I couldn't stand being in. But I did try a little bit of jubeat back then because it was fun and the easiest one for me to get into at the time.
Fast forward a few years, I've played a teeny bit of Guitar Hero and other assorted rhythm games, but there was a huge drought of those until the late 2010s and moving into the 2020s. I mean, there were a few good ones like Audiosurf and Beat Hazard. Rocksmith too, but that one required peripherals I didn't have the money to get until later in my life. I also managed to play DJ Hero, a DJ-focused spinoff of the popular Guitar Hero series that required a turntable controller and a console, both of which I didn't have. But I got to play them at a friend's house in Sydney.
Then the advent of VR came along. And we got Beat Saber, Pistol Whip and Synth Riders. Three of the best VR rhythm games money could buy. Beat Saber and Synth Riders even had modding!
And then Just Shapes and Beats came out.
And then, just when I thought it couldn't get any better, DJMax Respect V was announced for Steam. A combination of compilation game and fresh new songs from a beloved Korean rhythm game franchise that I'd grown up with as a kid.
Right now though, I'm extremely happy with where rhythm games are. ROBOBEAT is a good one, but there's another in my sights called Dead as Disco which is like ROBOBEAT but it's a third-person brawler instead.
And, of course...

Re: Bap The Buttons! A Rhythm Game Thread
I've barely engaged with maimai until recently, but have been catching up on the history of a game I feel like I've slept on hard, so hearing that they added a third 15 (a FOUR MINUTE LONG one, at that) maybe a month after learning about Tsunagite had me floored in a great way. I wish maimai existed in the States or that I could get out more often to play the machines that do exist here but fate dictates that the closests Round1 to me is always at least an hour out :(Melty wrote: Thu Jul 17, 2025 2:21 am[...] though been following the Kaleidxscope streams pretty closely too! I suppose this is my intro post to this thread as well, so I'll talk a bit about myself as well. I like to think I'm ok at 4K VSRG (I'm mainly on Quaver), but I've been playing more BMS these days, as well as Beat Saber, if mostly to get out of my chair for once. I keep tabs with maimai, as I mentioned before, as well as IIDX, SDVX, and DDR, all games I dabble in on the rare occasion that I visit the arcade. I'm also very fond of obscure(-ish) and/or jank rhythm games to the point where I'm willing to fight my own computer to get some twenty year old game to work on it that I know I'll suffer trying to play when I do get it working.
All in all rhythm game fun :) but long xi song scary :(

AAAAA I wish I'd said Dead As Disco! I've been really looking forward to this one because Beat 'Em Ups and Rhythm are a match made in heaven and I'm SHOCKED its taken this long to get one going!!DJAtomika wrote: Thu Jul 17, 2025 3:31 am Right now though, I'm extremely happy with where rhythm games are. Oh my god, maimai is terrifying. I figured there’d be a lot of skill transfer from pop’n since both games are button-heavy, but when there are swipe patterns my brain completely stops working. It’s always extremely impressive to see folks clearing 13s at my arcade, good stuff. Aiming for rainbow rating?Melty wrote: Thu Jul 17, 2025 2:21 am Oooh! Surprised we missed this thread before, but complete sega sicko here o/
Mainly maimai finale (fall's gotta get here sooner, wanna play DX again already), been trying to get down more 12+/13 charts (just hit an SSS on Sacred Ruin earlier, along with End Mark + Credits S ranks over the last week or so), though been following the Kaleidxscope streams pretty closely too! Do absolutely wish there was an ongeki or wacca cab here though gfjkldjgf, especially an online/non-R1 one with the latter 'v')b
Also, not to be an enabler but… I do have a GAMO2 Ontroller for ongeki and it feels *damn good*. Their arcade-spec stuff is built excellently, highly recommended.
WOW that’s a cute suit btw!!! Also impressive stamina, I tried ddr for the first time in a decade last month and wiped myself out on a set of 6-to-8 difficulty stuff. My old stamina just isn’t there anymore

I can see the appeal here!!! I mean, just add a turntable and you’ve got IIDX. It’s also charmingly 2002 in terms of visuals tbqhDJAtomika wrote: Thu Jul 17, 2025 3:31 am I got my start in O2Jam Online, an extremely popular (at the time) rhythm game made in South Korea in 2002. Re: Bap The Buttons! A Rhythm Game Thread
Ooh, yay, a rhythm game thread!! I got into rhythm games a few years back and I've gotten obsessed with them to the point where I'm even making my own! I might share some stuff about it when it's more ready to be shown off...!
Beyond that I've been getting really into sega's rhythm games recently! An arcade opened up near me a couple months ago that has chunithm, maimai, ongeki, and a bunch more! I really enjoy it there [^-^]
I'm also a huge fan of Stepmania and especially NotITG - I absolutely love modcharts and I've written a few myself! I've got an old L-Tek from a friend that's my main pad at the moment, but I also recently picked up three more hardpads to repair! a high-level ITG player in the area was giving them away for free because they're in good physical shape but have electrical issues he's not really equipped to deal with, so I've taken them off his hands and am gonna fix 'em up to give to some of my other friends nearby who want them! I might keep one for myself though, they're really nice...

Re: Bap The Buttons! A Rhythm Game Thread
Oh, we had the same skill transfer (or lack of) experience with IIDX and our DJMAX/other VSRG experience too, totally fair.Faith wrote: Thu Jul 17, 2025 6:50 am Oh my god, maimai is terrifying. Actually hit rainbow a little while ago (that being ~2-3 weeks after the local cab got put online, at 15.68 as of last session though the actual cab's been there for a year or two, just offline with a patch), not sure how much more work we'd need to put in once we actually get to play DX properly to hit it there though. Played at some cons and stuff and think we got to abt 11k there? Usually just go for good scores on songs we like if anything, lol.
(Also that ontroller's been tempting, but gotta save for a couple other things possibly including the local jubeat cabinet first...)
Can feel that too honestly, slept pretty hard on DX news for a while, (though kind of on accident, Straight Into The Lights made sure to fix that pretty fast though as a pretty big/longtime cosmograph fan, and on top of it the song has a star tech chart too? Sign us and that 88% sightread up.) but kept up since then and actually managed to add our few points to that 7sref connection meter when they found it. (Still waiting for sega to give us an official BGA/audio release for Ref:rain too... That song really didn't feel as long as it is but already love it, they keep giving Acid bangers on top of Xaleid◆scopiX coming right before it.)WISH wrote: Thu Jul 17, 2025 6:34 am I've barely engaged with maimai until recently, but have been catching up on the history of a game I feel like I've slept on hard, so hearing that they added a third 15 (a FOUR MINUTE LONG one, at that) maybe a month after learning about Tsunagite had me floored in a great way. And yeah nearest Round1 from here is about 4 hours away too, but not gonna stop that trip from probably happening when they do get here, was pretty excited when they announced that advance release at AX before. (Just in time for INTL to get up to Prism+ too. 'v')9)

Re: Bap The Buttons! A Rhythm Game Thread
I'm sooooo jealous of the whole KaleiDXscope event tbh, I've been fantasizing about physical unlock macguffins in video games since before the whole toys-to-life boom and getting a physical memento of challenging the hardest things a game has to offer is insanely cool. I really hope I can make a project with something like that someday...

Re: Bap The Buttons! A Rhythm Game Thread
Thank you! Yeah it takes some practice but it's real fun once you get it figured out. And for me, falling off of the pad is usually just stepping over the side. One time I did end up on the edge of the pad and whacked my ankle against the side when it slipped but that was just a bruise.WISH wrote: Thu Jul 17, 2025 6:41 amDoubles with bar is scary to me already (Moreso in DDR for me than PIU??? But you really want to learn on an arcade pad one way or another, doubles on home pads is not good.
Oh don't get me wrong I was popping my head off between songs. But the stamina builds back up fast with practice. I started playing again regularly a few years ago and took a while to start back at like 4s and rebuild my form, trying to stand more upright and look cool rather than move my legs the least amount possible. Uses more energy and took me a bit to basically build up more stamina than I had before, but also taught me to enjoy easy songs without worrying too much about score.Faith wrote: Thu Jul 17, 2025 6:50 amWOW that’s a cute suit btw!!! Part of what I dislike about rhythm games, especially DDR, is that it's not really accessible for a lot of people. If you want to play regularly you either have to be fortunate enough to live near an arcade you can regularly visit, and spend a lot of money there, or a lot of money on equipment at home, which takes up a decent amount of space. I think it's really cool and I want a lot more people to play it but it's a huge money sink.
My only excuse is I got into it long before I knew better plus I've been fortunate enough to get the equipment. I need to have friends over more often to play, best way to make use of having the stuff is to share it.

Re: Bap The Buttons! A Rhythm Game Thread
I have an L-TEK DDR Pad. It was way too expensive and it wasn't sensitive enough so I had to open it up and penny mod it, though I used a bag of 2mm copper shims and conductive foil tape.
I haven't used it in a while, but it's meant to be how I get my exercise in. Unfortunately because in the next few months a bunch of people who know how to repair a house will come in and rip out half of my downstairs and replace it with wood that is not in active decay, so it has been sidelined as trying to coordinate that and working have been taking up all my mental energy. I've been so close to getting a perfect on The Protomen's Light up the Night I always seem to miss one note.
I do look forward to getting back to it though, I'm using the linux version of Project OutFox as my stepmania-compatible solution, although I now know it's on steam and I could have just done it that way instead.
I used to be kind of OK at rock band drums but anything with alot of kicks would make my leg cramp up

How did I quote like two posts ahead of mine and completely gloss over the O2JAM mention lolDJAtomika wrote: Thu Jul 17, 2025 3:31 am I got my start in O2Jam Online, an extremely popular (at the time) rhythm game made in South Korea in 2002. I've never played O2JAM myself and I play more than one 7K VSRG that is far more modern but I've always been curious about it for its aesthetic and legacy. It's one obscure, old rhythm game I never had the chance to play and probably never will, but I've silently wished some miracle occurred that landed a DPJAM invite in my hands since I learned about it (but no shot I'll ever see one especially at my skill level)
God same :( I used to be able to hit DDR 12s and even an ITG stamina 12 years ago but any time I go to the arcade I foolishly boot up Trip Machine Evolution DSP thinking I will even pass it to begin with and it NUKES me. I definitely hope I can build that stamina back up one day; I feel like I could be way better at the game, but my legs haven't been able to catch up with my ambition for a good long whileFaith wrote: Thu Jul 17, 2025 6:50 am WOW that’s a cute suit btw!!! Re: Bap The Buttons! A Rhythm Game Thread
roblox rhythm games anyone?

https://www.roblox.com/games/698448212/ ... Rhythm-RPG
Robeats
pretty standard 4-button game, lots of music to choose from and settings, i think its like perfectly normal rhythm game + it has collaborations w/ mosnstercat/fnf/etcetera so it can legally have the music yay! (shout out the somewhere between 2016-2020 roblox mass copyright exodus <3)

https://www.roblox.com/games/2677609345 ... hythm-Game
Soundspace
closest thing to osu? its like a mix between osu and beatsaber, i really like it for what it is!! theres no clicking, just mouse movement which would be fun w/ a tablet (i havent tried yet). the beat hit noise is SO SATISFYING. I AM in love. perfect clicks ahfgh. skill goes from like really easy to REALLY hard tho </3 fun for the odd time i hop on!!

Project:Rusher
this is probably one of my fave ones on roblox right now, extremely stands out as something i personally havent seen in other games before (but probably exists, ive just never encountered it). 2-button game, any button works (you dont have to bind anything, its literally any input). each map has its own like gimmick, like a chance time in project diva but each song has its own completely unique thing it does. skill scales REALLY nicely in it too, i cant recommend this one enough tbh
--
would share more, but honestly i think a lot of the ones i used to play on roblox got removed in the like copyright exodus. there was a really stunning sound voltex clone that defo got taken down, as well as some really neat platformers, but i doubt i could find them now. i <3 roblox so like... please feed me some more roblox ones if yall got any!!!

Ooh, yeah also missed out on the roblox rhythm games too, (Knew the community's been there and heard about robeats a bit in the past, but never really had any real reason to get back into the site even with our old account still sitting there) but the initial any button point reminded me of PROJEKT GODHAND and might as well mention it too though granted pretty different execution.SWZTCH wrote: Thu Jul 17, 2025 11:04 pm

(Been following it before early access since same devs as NOISZ, 8k game in the form of two 4k lanes, each corresponding to *any* key on that side of the keyboard, both as silly/chaotic as it sounds and especially looks but pretty fun.)
And yeah seeing P:R in action definitely see the Unbeatable correlation a bit too like Faith brought up, absolutely looks pretty cool either way especially as a big gimmick enjoyer. o/
(Gotta take our chance to yap a bit about Unbeatable a bit in general too though real quick, been super excited about that one for a few years now, been going to their magfest booths the last couple of years so got that merch + KS stuff coming in when it's actually out, last few SMX sets have just been Proper Rhythm grinding for a reason.^^)

Re: Bap The Buttons! A Rhythm Game Thread
PROJEKT GODHAND is quite possibly the most insane rhythm game ever made and I wish I could play it more, it's so much fucking fun and all the challenges it's got are top-notch but oh god my arthritic fingers fucking haaaaaaaate it

Had a breakthrough in Wacca tonight. Unlocked super hard mode, got my first triple S. Missless across all three.

Re: Bap The Buttons! A Rhythm Game Thread
my main game is wacca (the long road to rainbow continues) but i also somewhat main maimai dx and chunithm. been trying to get better at IIDX and SDVX so that i've got breather games when i'm at the arcade but buttons are scary.
other schemes i've considered are an ongeki controller (you have 6 buttons but good luck doing chords) and two IIDX controllers in doubles configuration (just use the white keys) but i haven't attempted them yet.
holy shit i've never actually seen an EZ2Dancer cab before. i've been so fascinated by EZ2DJ/EZ2ON for a while (very much in the "Beatmania III only existed so that konami could patent troll amuseworld" conspiracy camp) but they remain really rare here, especially EZ2Dancer.Rivaclaw wrote: Tue Jul 15, 2025 7:37 pm I was properly active playing rhythm games between 2000 and 2010; the original Dancing Stage, Dancing Stage EuroMix, EuroMix 2, a couple of imported DDR cabs around the UK, and my ultimate rhythm game love... EZ2Dancer!
SPEAKING OF PROJEKT GODHAND i've been trying to figure out the goofiest possible input schemes for it and last night got to try it with Faith's pop'n controller. single player is hard for me because my hands are too small to hit 4-button chords but two player (one on each "hand") is actually really fun.Melty wrote: Sat Jul 19, 2025 5:14 am Ooh, yeah also missed out on the roblox rhythm games too, (Knew the community's been there and heard about robeats a bit in the past, but never really had any real reason to get back into the site even with our old account still sitting there) but the initial any button point reminded me of PROJEKT GODHAND and might as well mention it too though granted pretty different execution.

Oh yeah, I saw your video of that yesterday! I forwarded it to one of the devs - he's done a bunch of Weird And Fucked Up input scheme challenges of his own, including a Tasoller, a Voltex controller, and even a DDR hardpad! There are no limits to how you can bap...jkap wrote: Sun Jul 20, 2025 4:09 pm SPEAKING OF PROJEKT GODHAND i've been trying to figure out the goofiest possible input schemes for it and last night got to try it with Faith's pop'n controller. single player is hard for me because my hands are too small to hit 4-button chords but two player (one on each "hand") is actually really fun.

Re: Bap The Buttons! A Rhythm Game Thread
LMAO we were joking about DDR doubles being the worst possible way to play it. i should try using my tasoller for it at some point..............Lemma wrote: Sun Jul 20, 2025 6:40 pm Oh yeah, I saw your video of that yesterday! Re: Bap The Buttons! A Rhythm Game Thread
The way he rigged it up was editing his pad's firmware to input one blue key on left, one red key on right, two blue keys on down, and two red keys on up then play on glorious mode - he even ended up beating diabolic devotion maximum with it!jkap wrote: Sun Jul 20, 2025 6:46 pm LMAO we were joking about DDR doubles being the worst possible way to play it. i should try using my tasoller for it at some point..............
