Fangame thread

Fangames have always been one of my favorite sides of fanworks in general. Just someone liking a thing enough to put their own spin on it is just endlessly exciting to me. I am particularly attached to the 2000s/early 2010s era of that stuff.

Starting things off with Super Robotnik Land, a fangame for a YTP somehow that is smothered in old game maker jank and shitposting of the era.

If anyone remembers I Wanna Be The Guy, there's still an active fan community going for that game nearly 20 years later! The modern fangames are mostly unrecognizable to the original thing, but the spirit is still there and several subgenres have formed over time. This also gives me an excuse to share the ones I've made (though a good few of them have aged pretty badly)

In 2020 I finally went back to it and finished up a little multiplayer game of it using some modern tech I'd learned

You can play it in browser, it's multiplayer but a bit janky over the wire - was messing around with lambdas and websockets and thought it'd be fun to have a splash with one another haha I'd like to revisit the idea sometime but music has taken creative priority for me in recent years ^^

Sonic Robo Blast 2!

While not a game I actively kept up with, the fact it's still going and getting updates since it's first demo release in November 2000 is wild. The fact it's also based on a doom branch is wild too.

I played it a chunk, keeping up with the level contests for a bit back in 2007, and recently was poking it again January this year, and it's really cool to have seen how far it's evolved.

(I also should mention SRB2 Kart and Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers but I suck at them so am not a good "hey you should play them" but they're very technically good. In terms of tech on show not "eh I guess they're good")
