SAGE '25!

Post by DarkOverord »

AKA the Sonic Amateur Games Expo! There's more than just Sonic here! Anyone else been checking out the demos? Any picks you've tried so far that you've liked a lot? Share 'em :D
Standard Glossy@2x.png
Three things I'd bring to people's attention are:
  • A remake of Tails Adventure! It's still all Game Gear style, but better screen space, QoL changes and honestly I think I actually will try and beat it now!
  • A little Klondike solitaire rougelike called Solitaire Battle! It's cute, I def think it'll be a good little game to just waste time on when you've only got a short period to play. Course you would also have to like solitaire :B
  • And to round out with a fangame, Comet Catastrophe! It plays like Sonic, unsurprisingly, but the current two playable have enough of their own gameplay to make a difference! Granted they are very "This guy is a Fire Shield and that guy is a Lightning Shield" for their basic ability but they have some extra abilities on top of that. Word of warning though, for some reason without rebinding the game doesn't recognise up/down on the analogue stick, you can spin dash :P

I really enjoyed Dono's Tale and Rog & Roll. Dono's Tale has some really interesting movement that feels satisfying to use alongside a very cute art style, and Rog & Roll is actually based on one of my favorite webcomics so I was really happy to see the characters and world again; the game does some interesting level design stuff with the "pixel art with depth" style it has going on.

I should probably show off my own SAGE 2025 game, which is a SNES homebrew game.

So far I've tried out Telegeddon, Snoutbreakers, and Project Reignition.

Telegeddon is a sort of RPG where instead of battles, you play Wario Ware-style microgames to deal damage. And they're just as wacky and all-over-the-place as their inspiration. It's got some decent puzzle-platforming in there too - it's a wacky little game and I'm definitely looking forward to the final version. (Granted, maybe I'm a little biased - it's by MFGG alumni, and one of the musicians is responsible for my nickname.)

Snoutbreakers is a Punch-Out!! inspired game and it absolutely nails it. I loved Punch-Out!! on the Wii and this hits me right in the exact same way, and it's got its own little twist on the specific mechanics that make it interesting (and also, makes me wonder if the developer has played Teleroboxer). Can't wait for this one, I know I'm gonna love it.

Project Reignition I really just tried out because I gotta be honest I really don't like Secret Rings all that much but hey, maybe with a more traditional control scheme it'll be better. It... is? It's still got some jank to it since it's just here to remove the waggle controls, that's it, but I mean, I'll definitely keep an eye on it.

I should try out the Tails' Adventure remake. I played the original not too long ago and really enjoyed it, and I kinda wish they'd make a new one. Tails is definitely popular enough to headline his own game again!

Yeah I did try Snoutbreakers, I'm terrible at that style of game though but oh my gosh the art style and the character designs? Fantastic!
